The Magic Lamp by Keith Ellis

This book is an easy, entertaining read on goal setting. Three areas are identified by the author as the keys to achieve success:

1. Self Confidence

2. Perseverance

3. Willingness to Set Personal Goals

The book is subtitled : Goal Setting for People Who Hate Setting Goals. That sounds like most of us. By tying in goal setting with accomplishing what you wish for in life, the author makes some simple, powerful points that might help you in your professional and personal life.

Here’s a sample from the book : “Before you can make your wishes come true, you must first decide what to wish for. When people don’t get what they want from life, usually it’s because they don’t know what they want.”

Here’s my favorite story from the book about what it takes to achieve success:

“There was once a cocktail party at which a world-famous pianist gave a recital. After the performance, the hostess said to the pianist, “I would give anything to be able to play like you.”

The pianist looked at her thoughtfully for a moment and replied, “No, you wouldn’t”.

The hostess, surprised and embarrassed in front of her guests, said, “I most certainly would.”

The pianist shook his head. “You would love to play as I play now, but you are not willing to practice eight hours a day for the next twenty years to learn how to play that way.”

The hostess wanted to be a concert pianist but she was not willing to pay the price to become one.

It’s a powerful message that applies to our profession as well. The good news is that you do not have to practice eight hours a day for twenty years to be successful in sales. But, you do need to make the effort to improve and reach the goals you have set for yourself.
